Empowering our community: Becoming voter registration champions

16th July 2024

In the lead-up to the general election, we partnered with Citizens UK to help as many people as possible be informed about how to make their vote count. By becoming voter registration champions, we aimed to make a difference in democratic participation among food bank clients and help ensure at-risk voters can exercise their right to vote.

Why It Matters

Some groups are more likely to miss out on voting, including:

  • Young people
  • Non-UK nationals
  • Renters
  • People who have recently moved
  • Residents of poorer communities
  • Ethnic minorities

These groups often face obstacles such as lack of information, frequent changes of address, or less access to resources that make it harder for them to register and vote.

Our Efforts

After we were accredited by Citizens UK, we were able to provide vital information to our clients about how to register to vote. Citizens UK provided leaflets, information sheets, and a QR code, which made the process easy and effortless. We also engaged our clients in conversations about the importance of voting, as well as discussions with those who strongly opposed voting.

Ultimately, our goal was to raise awareness of the importance of the general election and ensure those with the right to vote faced no barriers to doing so. By working together, we can make our voices and votes count.
